Felt 2 for 2 - Frodeno Scores Olympic GOLD!!!
 |
Beijing, Aug. 19, 2008—In one of the most exciting finishes in Olympic triathlon, Felt athlete Jan Frodeno came up big when it counted. The big German matched the late sprint effort of Canadian Simon Whitifield in the waning 300 yards of the run—then countered in the final 100 yards to win the men’s Olympic triathlon by five seconds in a sprint finish, in 1:48:52.
Frodeno cruised safely in the main group throughout the 1.5k swim, then exited the water, boarded his F1 and drove the hard opening miles to make the main pack on the bike. While most attacks and were absorbed, two men broke away, taking their chances against the class runners—Frodeno among them—on the run.
Once off the bike, the high pace and hot temps under the Beijing sun began to melt several favorites. In the end, it was four men, three medals, and just one gold. And while Whitfield made a valiant effort, Frodeno jumped on his feet, then countered with his own surge to take Germany’s first gold medal in triathlon.
Frodeno’s win helped Felt scored a clean sweep in Olympics. The day prior, Australian Felt athlete Emma Snowsill won the women’s Olympic triathlon in a runaway.
GOLD! Snowsill wins Beijing Olympic Women’s Triathlon
 |
Beijing, Aug. 17, 2008—In the most dominant performances in Olympic women’s triathlon, Australian Felt athlete Emma Snowsill claimed gold for Australia, running away with the victory in 1:58:27.
The win was Snowsill’s first Olympic medal, and Australia’s first Olympic gold medal. The last Australian to medal in triathlon was fellow Felt athlete and former Hawaii Ironman winner Michellie Jones, who earned silver in 2000 in Sydney.
Snowsill emerged from the 1.5-kilometer in just under 20 minutes with a large lead pack, and set out on the rolling six-lap bike course. The diminutive Aussie was low profile throughout the bike, but still managed to claim the third-fastest bike of the day in 1:04:20 over the 40-kilometer course.
But once on the run, Snowsill exerted her dominance, setting a searing pace that saw any pretenders to the crown immediately vying for silver. She grew her lead to eventually create a comfortable one-minute buffer as the multi-loop run under a hot Bejiing sun went on.
By the finish and without a challenger in sight, Snowsill grabbed an Australian flag and coasted down the final meters, slapping hands with the crown while absorbing the experience. The next finisher would come in a distant one minute, six seconds later.
